Perilla is a warming aromatic mint native to Asia. It has a spicy, sweet and slightly licorice-like scent. Less used in the west, perilla has a large amount of constituent crossover with other aromatic mints.

Perilla is grown industrially as a food flavoring and is naturalized in our area. It is listed as a noxious weed and we consider it to be one of the invasive plants we control via hard harvesting, but it isn’t super aggressive as a non-shade-tolerant plant that mostly grows in edge spaces around here. Primarily it poses a hazard to neighboring grazing cattle and is less of a concern to the native ecosystem, but we stay on top of it regardless.

Why topical use only? State and federal regulations require products for human consumption to be produced in a certified commercial kitchen. While we strive for the highest production standards, we do not maintain a commercial kitchen.
