Mullein is a beloved volunteer in our garden. Not only is it a classic apothecary staple, it’s wonderful for soil in disturbed sites as its fast-growing, tough root system prevents erosion and its large leaves shade soil and help retain moisture. The leaves also decompose readily, adding much-needed biomass. Best of all, mullein has a biennial life cycle and doesn’t tolerate competition well–it volunteers from the soil seedbank, improves the site it grows on, and cedes its time when other plants are ready to move in. Some sources refer to mullein as invasive–but as far as we can tell, it’s really only causing problems for construction sites and other sites of ecological disturbance!
